Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has raised serious concerns about the impact of the Trefriw Flood Alleviation Works on businesses in the West of the Conwy Valley.
The works include making culverts larger and improving their inlets in 2024/25, and lifting section of the B5106 above the Afon Conwy flood level in 2025/26.
Having liaised with the Local Authority about the impact of the works on communities in the West of the Conwy Valley, Janet said:
“The Local Authority have finally shared the documentation with me, including the Appraisal Summary Table and Project Risk Management Tool.
“I am very disappointed that no consideration seems to have been given to the impact of the works on businesses in the short term.
“I acknowledge that the benefit, after the works are completed, is considered, but there seems to be nothing about the risk to footfall, income, and sustainability of businesses in the West of the Conwy Valley whilst the works are underway.
“All involved in this scheme’s development, approval, and delivery should explain to business owners why the short term economic impact was not considered”.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy, wedi codi pryderon difrifol am effaith Gwaith Lliniaru Llifogydd Trefriw ar fusnesau yng Ngorllewin Dyffryn Conwy.
Mae'r gwaith yn cynnwys gwneud ceuffosydd yn fwy a gwella eu mewnfeydd yn 2024/25, a chodi rhan o'r B5106 uwchben lefel llifogydd Afon Conwy yn 2025/26.
Ar ôl cysylltu â'r Awdurdod Lleol am effaith y gwaith ar gymunedau yng Ngorllewin Dyffryn Conwy, dywedodd Janet:
“Mae'r Awdurdod Lleol wedi rhannu'r ddogfennaeth gyda mi o’r diwedd, gan gynnwys Tabl Crynodeb yr Arfarniad a'r Offeryn Rheoli Risg Prosiect.
“Rwy'n siomedig iawn nad yw'n ymddangos bod unrhyw ystyriaeth wedi’i rhoi i effaith y gwaith ar fusnesau yn y tymor byr.
“Rwy'n cydnabod bod y budd, ar ôl i'r gwaith gael ei gwblhau, yn cael ei hystyried, ond mae'n ymddangos nad oes dim am y risg i nifer defnyddwyr, incwm a chynaliadwyedd busnesau yng Ngorllewin Dyffryn Conwy tra bo'r gwaith ar y gweill.
“Dylai pawb sy'n ymwneud â datblygu, cymeradwyo a chyflwyno'r cynllun hwn egluro wrth berchnogion busnes pam na chafodd yr effaith economaidd tymor byr ei hystyried”.
