Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, is once again calling for the Welsh Government to step back from the precipice and withdraw its plans to introduce a tourism tax in Wales.

Janet said:

“In Wales 25% of registered businesses are in the visitor economy. In Conwy County alone the tourism economy was worth nearly £900 million in 2019, employing thousands of people. The importance of this industry locally and to Wales cannot be overstated.

“With this industry suffering significantly over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, with businesses in Aberconwy reporting a loss of revenue of between 60-85%, and the cost-of-living crisis further impacting on the tourism and hospitality sector, now more than ever this industry needs support not new taxes.

“Hitting our hard-working business owners and tourism operators, many of them small to medium sized businesses, a tourism tax will only reduce Wales’s competitiveness in respect of other holiday destinations and reduce visitor numbers.

“These concerns are already raised on the continent; the Mallorca Hoteliers Federation has come out strongly against the Government’s ongoing tourism tax citing a negative impact on international competitiveness.

“Having told the Welsh Government in the Senedd previously, of the devastating impact this tax will have on our tourism businesses, I am once again urging them to withdraw from this regressive and destructive proposal and instead start to back our tourism economy in Wales."

Treth Dwristiaeth yn dda i ddim i Gymru!

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, yn galw unwaith eto ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gamu ôl o’r dibyn a dileu ei chynlluniau i gyflwyno treth dwristiaeth yng Nghymru.

Meddai Janet:

“Mae 25% o fusnesau cofrestredig Cymru yn yr economi ymwelwyr. Yn sir Conwy yn unig, roedd yr economi dwristiaeth yn werth bron i £900 miliwn yn 2019, ac yn cyflogi miloedd o bobl. Ni ellir gorbwysleisio pwysigrwydd y diwydiant hwn yn lleol ac i Gymru.

“Gyda’r diwydiant hwn yn dioddef yn sylweddol yn ystod pandemig COVID-19, gyda busnesau Aberconwy’n nodi colled refeniw o rhwng 60-85%, a’r argyfwng costau byw yn effeithio ymhellach ar y sector twristiaeth a lletygarwch, mae angen cymorth ar y diwydiant hwn yn fwy nag erioed, nid trethi newydd.

“Bydd treth dwristiaeth yn taro perchnogion busnes a gweithredwyr twristiaeth sy’n gweithio’n galed, llawer ohonynt yn fusnesau bach a chanolig, ac yn lleihau gallu Cymru i gystadlu â chyrchfannau gwyliau eraill ac yn lleihau niferoedd ymwelwyr.

“Mae’r pryderon hyn yn cael eu codi eisoes ar y cyfandir: mae Mallorca Hoteliers Federation wedi dod allan yn gryf yn erbyn treth dwristiaeth barhaus y Llywodraeth gan ddweud ei bod yn cael effaith negyddol ar y gallu i gystadlu’n rhyngwladol.

“Ar ôl dweud wrth Lywodraeth Cymru yn y Senedd o’r blaen am yr effaith ddinistriol y bydd y dreth hon yn ei chael ar ein busnesau twristiaeth, rwy’n eu hannog eto i ddileu’r cynnig dinistriol hwn, sy’n gam yn ôl, a dechrau cefnogi’n heconomi dwristiaeth yng Nghymru.”
