Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is shocked to learn that Transport for Wales’s Delay Repay Scheme payout for 2023/24 totalled £1,884,794.86.
Following a question to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates MS, TfW have revealed that from March 2023 to March 2024, the compensation issued via TfW’s Delay Repay system was £1,136,826.39 for delays and £747,968.47 for cancellations.
On top of this from March 2023 to March 2024, TfW issued compensation worth £120,689.59 for delays and £124,803.99 for cancellations.
These figures are as a consequence of trains being delayed by 15 minutes or more.
Commenting on the news, Janet said:
“Yet again we are seeing another example of the poorly run franchise owned and managed by the Welsh Government.
“Time and time again we hear from the Welsh Government that things are improving, that more trains are running on time and with less cancellations. However, these figures clearly show that not to be the case.
“Compared to Great Western Railway, which averages around £1.46 million in annual compensation, it’s clear the Welsh Government isn’t doing enough – especially considering that TfW carries only about a quarter of the passengers GWR does.
“As with Cardiff Airport and its growing financial black hole, it’s clear that the Welsh Government’s business acumen is utterly nonsensical. With 178 trains cancelled on the Conwy Valley line alone in 2023 and TfW already £100 million in the red, how long do we let this saga go on for?”

Ar ben hyn o fis Mawrth 2023 i fis Mawrth 2024, talodd TrC iawndal gwerth £120,689.59 am oedi a £124,803.99 am ganslo gwasanaethau.
Mae'r ffigurau hyn o ganlyniad i oedi o 15 munud neu fwy ar drenau.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
“Unwaith eto, rydyn ni’n gweld enghraifft arall o'r fasnachfraint sy'n cael ei rhedeg yn wael sy'n eiddo i Lywodraeth Cymru ac yn cael ei rheoli ganddi.
“Dro ar ôl tro rydyn ni'n ni'n clywed gan Lywodraeth Cymru bod pethau'n gwella, bod mwy o drenau’n rhedeg ar amser a llai o wasanaethau’n cael eu canslo. Fodd bynnag, mae'r ffigurau hyn yn dangos yn glir nad yw hynny'n wir.
“O gymharu â Great Western Railways, sy’n talu tua £1.46 miliwn mewn iawndal blynyddol ar gyfartaledd, mae'n amlwg nad yw Llywodraeth Cymru’n gwneud digon – yn enwedig o ystyried bod TrC ond yn cludo ond tua chwarter y teithwyr y mae GWR yn eu cludo.
“Fel gyda Maes Awyr Caerdydd a'i dwll du ariannol cynyddol, mae'n amlwg bod craffter busnes Llywodraeth Cymru yn hurt bost. Gyda 178 o drenau wedi'u canslo ar reilffordd Dyffryn Conwy yn unig yn 2023 a TrC eisoes £100 miliwn yn y coch, am ba hyd ydyn ni am ganiatáu i'r saga yma barhau?”
