Statement on the resignation of the First Minister

Commenting on the resignation, Janet said:

“It has been a very turbulent time in the Senedd over the last few months. Sadly, we have been consumed by scandal and salacious rumour, and it is time to return to some normality. Our Parliament must be place of decorum and decency, otherwise we risk diminishing the legitimacy of devolution in Wales.

“The disintegration of the First Minister’s Cabinet has left Wales rudderless. At a time when waiting lists are the longest in the UK, our PISA scores have declined and businesses are being forgotten, the internal turmoil of the Welsh Labour Party is utterly unedifying.

“The First Minister has sadly allowed himself to be consumed by this. He has made choices that regrettably for him have come back to haunt him. I do believe he brought this on himself and as such his resignation was inevitable, so I thank him for doing so.

“The position of First Minister is one of great responsibility and often a difficult and demanding one. It is right of him to step aside but I am aware of how difficult the last few months will have been for him.

“I wish Vaughan Gething all the best for the future and I look forward to seeing him in the chamber.”
