Wales’s health and social care sector is facing extreme strain. Since 1999, we have seen 4,277 daily NHS Wales beds lost. Forty elderly care homes in Wales closed between 2020 and 2023, with only four opening.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has raised serious concerns about the state of social care in Wales.
Commenting on this, Janet said:
“The loss of care homes and care workers, due to certain qualification requirements, is placing serious strain on our vital care sector. I am regularly contacted by constituents stating that they, or their family members, are unable to leave hospital after treatment because there is no agreement for a care home to take them.
“This, along with seeing passionate, hardworking, skilled carers leaving the sector due to the financial and time constraints involved in obtaining certain levels of qualifications, is deeply concerning.
“Research conducted by Christie & Co shows that there could be a loss of as many as 10,000 beds in Wales over the next decade, which is shocking.
“Today, I will call on the First Minister to commit to increasing the number of social care beds available in Wales and to supporting our carers.”

Mae sector iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol Cymru yn wynebu straen eithafol. Ers 1999, rydyn ni wedi gweld 4,277 o welyau dydd GIG Cymru yn cael eu colli. Caeodd deugain o gartrefi gofal henoed yng Nghymru rhwng 2020 a 2023, gyda dim ond pedwar yn agor.
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Aberconwy, wedi codi pryderon difrifol am gyflwr gofal cymdeithasol yng Nghymru.
Meddai Janet:
"Mae colli cartrefi gofal a gweithwyr gofal, oherwydd rhai gofynion cymwysterau, yn rhoi straen difrifol ar ein sector gofal hanfodol. Mae etholwyr yn cysylltu â mi yn rheolaidd gan ddweud nad ydyn nhw, neu aelodau o'u teulu, yn gallu gadael yr ysbyty ar ôl triniaeth oherwydd nad oes cytundeb i gartref gofal eu cymryd nhw.
"Mae hyn, ynghyd â gweld gofalwyr angerddol, gweithgar a medrus yn gadael y sector oherwydd y cyfyngiadau ariannol ac amser sy'n gysylltiedig â chael lefelau penodol o gymwysterau, yn peri pryder mawr.
"Mae ymchwil a gynhaliwyd gan Christie & Co yn dangos y gallai cymaint â 10,000 o welyau gael eu colli yng Nghymru dros y degawd nesaf, sy'n syfrdanol.
"Heddiw, byddaf yn galw ar y Prif Weinidog i ymrwymo i gynyddu nifer y gwelyau gofal cymdeithasol sydd ar gael yng Nghymru ac i gefnogi ein gofalwyr."
