Snowdonia National Park Faces Real-Terms Cuts

Janet Finch-Saunders MS has scrutinised the Welsh Government on the funding of Snowdonia National Park.

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy questioned Rebecca Evans MS, the Minister for Finance and Local Government, on the pressures faced by the park.

The effect of inflation on the Authority's flat budget until the end of 2024/25 is approximately £1.1M, which is equivalent to a 20% real-terms cut.

Despite these pressures, the Welsh Government only intends to provide a flat budget of just over £5.4 million.

Speaking in the Senedd today, Janet said:

“Snowdonia National Park goes above and beyond to deliver on its statutory purposes .

“The National Park is doing everything possible to raise money, but its work is being completely undermined by continued real term cuts from the Welsh Government.

“Bearing in mind that Snowdonia is now facing potential job and service losses, and is key to tackling the climate and nature crisis, the Welsh Government should prove they are committed to the future of the national park by increasing the grant.

“The Welsh Government cannot keep expecting these organisations to do more with less”.
