As the UK Government announces support for the Sizewell C nuclear plant and the Secretary State for Wales, the Rt. Hon. Simon Hart MP, travels to the US to promote Welsh nuclear power, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, has raised her concerns regarding the Welsh Government’s commitment to nuclear power.
Janet has highlighted that since the Welsh Government signed its Co-operation agreement with the anti-nuclear Plaid Cymru, their commitment to the industry has not been clear.
Commenting on the matter Janet said:
“The shocking and illegal actions of President Putin has highlighted that it is more important than ever that Wales and the United Kingdom become self-reliant and improve our energy security.
“Nuclear energy provides a unique opportunity to supply significant amounts of reliable and low-carbon electricity that will not only provide Wales with the energy security it requires but also assist in meeting our Net Zero targets.
“Given this I am disappointed to see that the Welsh Government fail to commit to this industry. As I highlighted in the Siambr the Welsh Government’s Co-operation partners are fiercely opposed to nuclear power and I would hope that the Welsh Government are not allowing their political partnerships to stand in the way of achieving these important goals for Wales.
“I would urge the Welsh Government to commit to supporting the Wylfa and Trawsfynydd sites, and the nuclear industry across Wales allowing our society to take one step closer to ending our reliance on fossil fuels and providing the energy security we require.”
