Shadow Minister for Climate Change calls for the Anglesey to Cardiff flight link to resume as soon as possible

Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change today calls for the flight link between Anglesey and Cardiff Airport to resume as soon as possible with a reviewed timetable that meets business and leisure demand.

The Shadow Minister reflects on the importance of rolling out a comprehensive rail network in Wales through Transport for Wales (TfW) that connects town and cities to the Welsh Capital which can stimulate growth and tourism. However, the member draws attention to need for current business and leisure demands to be met and that this can’t be delayed at the expense of a developing rail network that has no definitive timetable of replacing the former flight route.

Commenting on the issue, Janet Said:

“The people of North Wales must be served by a regular and efficient transport link to the Welsh Capital, especially at a time of recovery.  With both North and South regions hosting major sporting events and vital business services, stimulating the movement of people between both could provide a major boost to the Welsh economy. Current rail links are indirect and can take up to 7 hours. This isn’t sustainable for a nation that seeks to energise its people in wake of a global pandemic. When operational, Eastern Airways ran a service that took 40 minutes. Bearing in mind that the service has continued to receive taxpayer’s money despite no flights, it’s time for this to be restored and give the people of North and South Wales a quick link between two major regions.”

The Shadow Minister has a strong record of supporting public transport supporting people and tourist to north Wales. Her work on Anglesey Airport sits along her long running campaign for direct rail services to Blaenau Ffestiniog from Holyhead port and Manchester Airport.

“For almost two years the Anglesey to Cardiff flight link has been grounded. Yet, it has been disclosed that the Welsh Government has paid out over £750,000 in subsidies in the last financial year. I’m particularly disappointed that no progress has been made on making full use of both Cardiff Airport and Anglesey in a post-pandemic world. As airlines move to remove covid-restrictions on board their services, the Welsh Government must reassure travellers of how safe it is to fly and encourage those to travel and explore Wales.”
