Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, and Cllr. Ian Turner have today renewed their long running campaign to see sand restored to North Shore beach, Llandudno.

The current defences are a combination of soft and hard engineering methods with the majority being hard defences with the stone upper beach, supplemented by artificial recharge, which provides protection to the stepped sea wall and promenade behind. Following the winter storms of 2013-14, emergency works were carried out to replenish the stone that had been lost/displaced. Approximately 30,000m3 of imported material was replaced – creating a difficult to access section of beach.

The latest Welsh Government position is a refusal to use the flood and coastal erosion budget to fund the restoration of sand.

Commenting on the campaign to restore sand on North Shore, Janet said:

“The Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour County Council should never have put quarry stones on our beach in the first place.

“Now that Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour are co-operating at Conwy Cabinet level and Welsh Government, they have a key opportunity to put the disaster they have created on our beach right.

“As it stands, there is a conflict between what the Welsh Government Ministers are claiming, and the Llandudno North and West Shore Outline Business Case shows.

“Cllr. Turner and I have a series of actions planned to try and stop more rocks dumped on our shore line, and do our upmost to see sand restored”.

ENDS

Heddiw mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, a'r Cynghorydd Ian Turner wedi ailafael yn eu hymgyrch hir i weld tywod yn cael ei adfer ar Draeth y Gogledd, Llandudno.

Mae'r amddiffynfeydd presennol yn gyfuniad o ddulliau peirianneg feddal a chaled gyda'r mwyafrif yn amddiffynfeydd caled gyda'r traeth carreg uchaf, law yn llaw â deunydd ail-lenwi artiffisial, sy'n darparu amddiffyniad i'r wal fôr risiog a'r promenâd y tu ôl iddi. Yn dilyn stormydd gaeaf 2013-14, cafodd gwaith brys ei wneud er mwyn ailgyflenwi'r cerrig a oedd wedi'u colli/dadleoli. Disodlwyd tua 30,000m3 o ddeunydd wedi'i fewnforio - gan ei gwneud yn anodd cael mynediad at ran o'r traeth.

Penderfyniad diweddaraf Llywodraeth Cymru yw gwrthod defnyddio'r gyllideb llifogydd ac erydu arfordirol i ariannu'r gwaith o adfer tywod.

Wrth sôn am yr ymgyrch i adfer tywod ar Draeth y Gogledd, dywedodd Janet:

“Ni ddylai'r Cyngor Sir Plaid Cymru a Llafur Cymru fod wedi rhoi cerrig chwarel ar ein traeth yn y lle cyntaf.

“Nawr bod Plaid Cymru a Llafur Cymru yn cydweithredu ar lefel Cabinet Conwy a Llywodraeth Cymru, mae ganddyn nhw gyfle allweddol i wneud iawn am y trychineb maen nhw wedi'i greu ar ein traeth.

“Fel mae hi ar hyn o bryd, mae gwrthdaro rhwng yr hyn y mae Gweinidogion Llywodraeth Cymru yn ei honni, a’r hyn y mae Achos Busnes Amlinellol Traeth y Gogledd a Gorllewin Llandudno yn ei ddangos.

“Mae gan y Cynghorydd Turner a minnau gyfres o gamau gweithredu sydd â’r nod o geisio atal mwy o greigiau rhag cael eu gollwng ar ein traethlin, a gwneud ein gorau i weld tywod yn cael ei adfer".
