Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy was honoured to attend the Llandudno Royal British Legion Battle of Britain Memorial Service yesterday.

On Sunday, 15th September, the Llandudno Royal British Legion held a commemoration service at the Llandudno war memorial to remember the Battle of Britain and the 80th anniversary of both Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem.

The service was attended by local dignitaries, veterans, military personnel and members of the public with wreaths being laid in remembrance.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“It was a great honour to attend the Llandudno Royal British Legion’s remembrance service on Sunday.

“The Battle of Britain is celebrating its 84th anniversary this year. An incredible operation that saw an estimated crew of 6,000 pilots defend Britain’s skies.

“Sadly, roughly half survived the four-month battle, with 544 Fighter Command pilots and crew among the dead, more than 700 from Bomber Command and almost 300 from Coastal Command falling to secure Britain's skies. It is these aviators that made the ultimate sacrifice and whom we remember.

“We also remembered Operation Market Garden, an important Allied mission in German-occupied Netherlands beginning on September 17th 1944, which aimed to secure a 64-mile corridor into Germany through the capturing of a bridge over the Nederrijn River.

“Without the bravery, courage and determination of these men and women we would not be standing here today. So for their service and sacrifice, alongside everyone in our community, I say thank you.”
