Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has criticised the cutting of the fare discount offered to Railcard users this month.

Currently, savings of one-third are advertised and applied at a rate of 34% for Railcard holders, including those aged 16-30 and over 60. However, starting in mid-September, the discount will be reduced to 33.4% as rail operators seek to increase fare revenue.

The cut will take effect from September 15th. Examples of anytime return fare increases for railcard holders include from £194.15 to £195.90 for Cardiff to London.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“While this may not seem a huge increase at first glance, this change has the potential to affect thousands of constituents who are already trying to make every penny count.

“It sends completely the wrong message. At a time when we need to combat climate change and many are struggling to make ends meet, reducing these vital discounts is utterly the wrong thing to be doing.

“I use the train all the time in Wales and know of a great number of people that rely on this scheme. I hope this isn’t going to set a precedent. To those who need it we should be offering more help with fares, especially as UK rail tickets are amongst the highest in the Europe.

“If rail companies want us to return to the railways then they have to acknowledge that they need to be competitively priced. If travelling by car is cheaper, why would one take the train?”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi beirniadu’r penderfyniad i leihau'r gostyngiad pris a gynigir i ddefnyddwyr Cardiau Rheilffordd y mis hwn.

Ar hyn o bryd, mae arbedion o draean yn cael eu hysbysebu a'u cymhwyso ar gyfradd o 34% ar gyfer deiliaid Cardiau Rheilffordd, gan gynnwys y rhai 16-30 oed a dros 60 oed. Fodd bynnag, o ganol mis Medi, bydd y gostyngiad yn cael ei ostwng i 33.4% wrth i weithredwyr rheilffyrdd geisio cynyddu refeniw prisiau.

Bydd y gostyngiad yn dod i rym o 15 Medi. Mae enghreifftiau o godiadau tocynnau taith ddwyffordd unrhyw bryd i ddeiliaid cardiau rheilffordd yn cynnwys o £194.15 i £195.90 ar gyfer Caerdydd i Lundain.

Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:

"Er nad yw hyn yn ymddangos yn gynnydd enfawr ar yr olwg gyntaf, mae gan y newid hwn y potensial i effeithio ar filoedd o etholwyr sydd eisoes yn ceisio gwneud i bob ceiniog gyfrif.

"Mae'n anfon y neges anghywir yn llwyr. Ar adeg pan mae angen i ni frwydro yn erbyn newid yn yr hinsawdd a gyda llawer yn ei chael hi'n anodd cadw dau ben llinyn ynghyd, lleihau'r gostyngiadau hanfodol hyn yw'r peth olaf y dylid ei wneud.

"Rwy'n defnyddio'r trên drwy'r amser yng Nghymru ac yn gwybod am nifer fawr o bobl sy'n dibynnu ar y cynllun hwn. Gobeithio na fydd hyn yn gosod cynsail. I'r rhai sydd ei angen, dylem fod yn cynnig mwy o help gyda phris tocynnau, yn enwedig gan fod tocynnau rheilffordd y DU ymhlith yr uchaf yn Ewrop.

"Os yw cwmnïau rheilffordd am i ni ddychwelyd i'r rheilffyrdd yna mae'n rhaid iddyn nhw gydnabod bod angen eu prisio'n gystadleuol. Os yw teithio mewn car yn rhatach, pam fyddai rhywun yn mynd ar y trên?"
