Clean up

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has been deeply concerned by the state of Llandudno’s North Shore.

Following storm Kathleen over the weekend the North Shore has been left battered and bruised after huge swells of crashing waves caused thousands of quarry rocks that litter the beach to come raining down along the promenade.

Rocks the size of dinner plates were strewn across the pathway, covering its entire length and width, and posing a huge risk to people of Llandudno.

A huge clean up operation is now underway with Conwy County Borough Council using tractors to bulldoze the rocks into piles which are then subsequently scooped up into a trailer and dumped back onto the beach.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“Here we are then. The chickens have come home to roost. After years of warnings we are finally witnessing the dire consequences of that fateful decision back in 2014.

“In my many years of being a Llandudno resident I have never seen such destruction following a storm. If the beach had been returned to its sandy state, or better still not polluted in the first place, then this issue would simply have been avoided.

“The extensive operation now underway is completely ruining the otherwise tranquil and calm morning here today, with gigantic tractors scrapping their metal buckets along the concrete to remove the rocks. It is making an unbelievable racket, wasting vast amounts of diesel and costing, I assume, a considerable amount of taxpayers money.

“This is why I will continue to campaign to get the sand restored to Llandudno’s North Shore. As we can see, we not only need this for economic, health and cultural reasons but for the safety of the public as well.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi bod yn pryderu'n fawr am gyflwr Traeth y Gogledd yn Llandudno.

Yn dilyn storm Kathleen dros y penwythnos, mae golwg drychinebus ar Draeth y Gogledd wedi i donnau enfawr achosi i filoedd o greigiau chwarel sy'n gorwedd ar hyd y traeth hyrddio ar y promenâd.

Cafodd creigiau maint platiau eu gollwng ar draws y llwybr, gan orchuddio bron pob rhan ohono a pheri risg enfawr i bobl Llandudno.

Mae gwaith glanhau enfawr bellach ar y gweill, gyda Chyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy yn defnyddio tractorau i grynhoi'r creigiau mewn pentyrrau sydd wedyn yn cael eu codi i drelar a'u gollwng yn ôl i'r traeth.

Wrth sôn am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:

“Dyma ni te. A heuo wynt, a fedo gorwynt. Ar ôl blynyddoedd o rybuddion, rydyn ni o'r diwedd yn dyst i ganlyniadau enbyd y penderfyniad tyngedfennol hwnnw yn ôl yn 2014.

“Yn ystod fy mlynyddoedd lawer o fyw yn Llandudno, dydw i erioed wedi gweld y fath ddinistr yn dilyn storm. Pe bai'r traeth wedi cael ei ddychwelyd i'w gyflwr tywodlyd neu, yn well fyth, heb ei lygru yn y lle cyntaf, gellid fod wedi osgoi hyn i gyd.

“Mae'r gwaith helaeth sydd bellach ar y gweill yn difetha'r bore tawel a digynnwrf yma heddiw, gyda thractorau enfawr yn crafu eu bwcedi metel ar hyd y concrit i gael gwared ar y creigiau. Mae'r sŵn yn anghredadwy, mae'n gwastraffu symiau enfawr o ddiesel ac mae'n costio, rwy'n tybio, miloedd o bunnoedd o arian trethdalwyr.

“Dyna pam y bydda i'n parhau i ymgyrchu i ddychwelyd y tywod i Draeth y Gogledd yn Llandudno. Fel y gwelwn ni, nid am resymau economaidd, iechyd a diwylliannol yn unig y mae angen gwneud hyn, ond er diogelwch y cyhoedd hefyd.”
