Yesterday, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, reiterated her call for pylons to be a last resort.
Janet said:
“Our Welsh countryside must be cherished and protected. Pylons do have an impact on our environment and nature. The RSPB has highlighted that, when erected in areas such as wetlands, certain bird species, such as swans and geese, fly into them, as they have poor vision while flying. Birds of prey have also been electrocuted when perching on pylons.
It is unnecessary for these pylons to be placed in our countryside, especially when the cables can be placed underground. It takes seven years to recoup the cost, and then the underground works are complete, everyone is happy.
I am continuing to call for a mandate that prohibits pylon construction unless absolutely necessary. We need to protect our countryside and environment, while also ensuring that our electricity infrastructure is more sustainable in the long term.”
