Concerns over Merthyr council staffing plans
Commenting on reports that Labour-run Merthyr council is considering staff dismissals and re-employment on new terms, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, said:
“Local government across Wales remains in turmoil and these plans will obviously be a cause for great concern.
“Over-inflated senior pay and a lack of Labour government leadership have left the future of Welsh councils in disarray.
“While Labour’s recent tough settlement – supported by the Lib Dems – means efficiency must be prioritised, frontline services and community trust have got to come first.
“In Merthyr, communities must be reassured that this chaos will not hit the services they receive.
“Local residents deserve to know if the area’s Assembly Member – who is also a government minister – supports these plans.”
