The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, has praised the work of the Carers Trust North Wales Crossroads Care Services in a visit to the organisation’s new North Wales Dementia hub at Quinton Hazell Enterprise Park in Mochdre, Colwyn Bay.

The visit took place to learn about the services on offer to residents across the North Wales region and was held jointly with Dr James Davies MP. The Centre offers advice, information and practical support to people with dementia, and to their families. Residents can give the Centre a ring to chat to a trained professional about the services on offer, or to book an appointment. The number required is 01492 542212.

Commenting after her visit, Janet said:

“Dementia affects approximately 42,000 people across Wales according to the NHS which means, based on our share of the population, at least 10,000 residents and their carers in North Wales have to manage it.

“What the Carers Trust are offering through this centre of excellence – via advice groups, dementia cafés, and support to access social activities – is exactly the type of project required to ensure that society’s most vulnerable, and the army of unpaid carers who lovingly tend to their needs, do not fall through the gaps.

“Whilst the Welsh Government must publish an updated Dementia Action Plan as soon as the current one ends, earlier this month I joined with colleagues from across the Siambr to call for the founding of a National Dementia Data Observatory so that we can better develop accurate diagnostic tools to ensure people can access the correct support post diagnosis.

“As Alzheimer’s Society Cymru have highlighted, Wales is in a unique place with access to dementia specific funding and skilled researchers in the field. It is imperative that we build on this fact so that the funding of similar dementia hubs can be provided and respite for our carers safeguarded.”
