Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, raised a point of order today after Jane Hutt MS, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Trefnydd and Chief Whip, seemed to be explaining that there were no food banks in the country before the Cameron-Clegg Coalition Government.

Mrs Finch-Saunders protested by explaining that there were food banks in the United Kingdom before the Conservative – Liberal Democrat Government of 2010.

Commenting after speaking in the Senedd, Janet said:

“The Trussell Trust opened its first UK food bank in 2000, a decade before the Coalition Government.

“There are numerous reasons for people being referred to food banks, including income or debt (71%), health (22%), issues with benefits (18%), change in work hours or unemployment (8%), insecure housing (7%), change in personal circumstances (5%), immigration status (5%), and domestic abuse (2%).

“Clearly, neither the UK nor Welsh governments are solely responsible for the sad fact that so many are reliant on food banks. As such, it is out of order for the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice to be trying to suggest that this point of national shame is the fault of any political party or parties in particular”.

Cododd Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, bwynt o drefn heddiw ar ôl i Jane Hutt AS, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Gyfiawnder Cymdeithasol, y Trefnydd a'r Prif Chwip, roi’r argraff ei bod yn egluro nad oedd banciau bwyd yn y wlad cyn Llywodraeth Glymblaid Cameron-Clegg .

Protestiodd Mrs Finch-Saunders gan egluro bod banciau bwyd yn y Deyrnas Unedig cyn  Llywodraeth Glymblaid y Ceidwadwyr a’r Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol yn 2010.

Wrth sôn am y peth ar ôl siarad yn y Senedd, dywedodd Janet:

"Agorodd Ymddiriedolaeth Trussell y banc bwyd cyntaf yn y DU yn 2000, ddegawd cyn y Llywodraeth Glymblaid.

"Mae nifer o resymau pam mae pobl yn cael eu cyfeirio at fanciau bwyd, gan gynnwys incwm neu ddyled (71%), iechyd (22%), problemau gyda budd-daliadau (18%), newid mewn oriau gwaith neu ddiweithdra (8%), tai ansefydlog (7%), newid mewn amgylchiadau personol (5%), statws mewnfudo (5%), a cham-drin domestig (2%).

"Yn amlwg, nid llywodraethau Cymru na'r DU sy’n llwyr gyfrifol am y ffaith drist bod cymaint o bobl yn ddibynnol ar fanciau bwyd. O'r herwydd, mae’n annerbyniol i Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Gyfiawnder Cymdeithasol fod yn ceisio awgrymu bod y pwynt yma o gywilydd cenedlaethol yn fai ar unrhyw blaid neu blaid wleidyddol yn benodol".
