On World Ocean Day, Sunday 9 June 2025, with the theme focused on “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate”, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has re-iterated the Welsh Conservative commitment to take action to champion the sea around Wales.

As part of the Welsh Conservatives’ environmental agenda, one of the key commitments is the introduction of a National Marine Development Plan, to be reviewed at least once every Senedd term. This pledge aims to ensure responsible marine management that clearly maps out what development can go where out at sea.

Commenting on World Ocean Day Janet said:

“Protecting our marine environment must be a top priority not only for preserving biodiversity but also for capturing carbon and creating clean energy.

“My Welsh Conservative colleagues and I have pledge to create a National Marine Development Plan. Ask yourselves, how can it be right that whilst planning on land has Future Wales, Planning Policy Wales, and Local Development Plans to guide developments, at present there is no similar system for what happens out in our seas?

“43% of Wales is out at sea, yet other than myself, hardly any politician raises marine policy on a regular basis in the Senedd. No longer can the huge potential above and below the waves be ignored”.

Ar Ddiwrnod Cefnforoedd y Byd, dydd Sul 9 Mehefin 2025, gyda’r thema yn dwyn y teitl "Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate", mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy a Gweinidog Cysgodol y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Newid yn yr Hinsawdd, wedi ailadrodd ymrwymiad y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig i weithredu i hyrwyddo'r môr o amgylch Cymru.

Fel rhan o agenda amgylcheddol y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, un o'r ymrwymiadau allweddol yw cyflwyno Cynllun Datblygu Morol Cenedlaethol, i'w adolygu o leiaf unwaith bob tymor y Senedd. Nod yr addewid hwn yw sicrhau rheolaeth forol gyfrifol sy'n mapio'n glir pa ddatblygiad all fynd ble allan ar y môr.

Wrth sôn am Ddiwrnod Cefnforoedd y Byd, dywedodd Janet:

"Rhaid i ddiogelu ein hamgylchedd morol fod yn brif flaenoriaeth nid yn unig ar gyfer cadw bioamrywiaeth ond hefyd ar gyfer dal carbon a chreu ynni glân.

"Mae gan fy nghydweithwyr yn y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig a minnau addewid i greu Cynllun Datblygu Morol Cenedlaethol. Gofynnwch i chi'ch hunain, sut y gall fod yn iawn fod gan gynllunio ar dir Dyfodol Cymru, Polisi Cynllunio Cymru a Chynlluniau Datblygu Lleol i lywio ei ddatblygiadau, ond nad oes system debyg ar gyfer yr hyn sy'n digwydd allan yn ein moroedd?

"Mae 43% o Gymru allan ar y môr, ond ar wahân i fi, prin yw’r gwleidyddion sy’n codi polisi morol yn rheolaidd yn y Senedd. Ni ellir anwybyddu’r potensial anferth sydd i’w gael uwchben ac o dan ein tonnau mwyach”.
