Janet Finch-Saunders MS has raised criticised comments made by Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorewerth calling for closer integration with the European Union, arguing that Wales should focus on making the most of the opportunities Brexit provides rather than seeking to reverse the decision of the British people.
The comments come after Rhun ap Iorwerth claimed Brexit “hasn’t worked”, cited economic challenges and called to rejoin the Single Market and Customs Union. However, questions have been raised regarding Plaid Cymru’s position that it would mean handing powers back to Brussels, accepting EU rules without control over them and undermining the UK’s ability to make independent decisions.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Bangor Conwy Môn said:
“Plaid Cymru’s position is contradictory. They speak of independence for Wales, ye their solution is to leave one union only to rejoin another. Rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union would mean giving up many of the freedoms that Brexit has delivered.
Brexit has enabled the UK to act independently, from delivering one of the world’s fastest vaccine rollouts and supporting Ukraine, to securing trade deals and leading in areas such as AI. Rather than talking Britain down, we should be making the most of these opportunities.
There is still much more to achieve. By embracing the freedoms Brexit has given us, supporting business and encouraging investment, we can build a stronger future for Wales and the United Kingdom.”
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi codi sylwadau sy’n beirniadu Arweinydd Plaid Cymru Rhun ap Iorwerth wrth iddo alw am integreiddio agosach â'r Undeb Ewropeaidd, gan ddadlau y dylai Cymru ganolbwyntio ar fanteisio i’r eithaf ar y cyfleoedd y mae Brexit yn eu cynnig yn hytrach na cheisio gwrthdroi penderfyniad pobl Prydain.
Daw'r sylwadau ar ôl i Rhun ap Iorwerth honni nad yw Brexit "wedi gweithio", gan gyfeirio at heriau economaidd a chan alw am ailymuno â'r Farchnad Sengl a'r Undeb Tollau. Fodd bynnag, mae cwestiynau wedi cael eu codi ynglŷn â safbwynt Plaid Cymru, a fyddai’n golygu trosglwyddo pwerau yn ôl i Frwsel, derbyn rheolau'r UE heb reolaeth drostyn nhw a thanseilio gallu'r DU i wneud penderfyniadau annibynnol.
Meddai Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Fangor Conwy Môn:
“Mae safbwynt Plaid Cymru yn gwbl anghyson. Maen nhw'n sôn am annibyniaeth i Gymru, ond eu hateb nhw yw gadael un undeb i ailymuno ag un arall. Byddai ailymuno â'r Farchnad Sengl a'r Undeb Tollau yn golygu rhoi'r gorau i lawer o'r rhyddid y mae Brexit wedi'i sicrhau.
Mae Brexit wedi galluogi'r DU i weithredu'n annibynnol, o gyflwyno un o'r cyfundrefnau brechu cyflymaf yn y byd a chefnogi Wcráin, i sicrhau cytundebau masnach ac arwain mewn meysydd fel Deallusrwydd Artiffisial. Yn hytrach na lladd ar Brydain, dylem fanteisio i’r eithaf ar y cyfleoedd hyn.
Mae llawer mwy i'w gyflawni o hyd. Drwy fanteisio ar y rhyddid y mae Brexit wedi'i roi i ni, cefnogi busnes ac annog buddsoddiad, gallwn adeiladu dyfodol cryfach i Gymru ac i’r Deyrnas Unedig."
