Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is delighted to see that Plaid Cymru have ended their co-operation deal with Welsh Labour.
Speaking last Friday, Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said he was "deeply concerned" about the £200,000 given to Mr Gething's leadership campaign by a company owned by a man twice convicted of environmental offences.
Additionally, there are increasing concerns within the broader UK Labour Party regarding the controversial donation, especially considering the party's stance on cracking down on questionable contributions.
Following a turbulent week after the First Minister suddenly fired one of his ministers after accusations of leaking from the government, it signifies increasingly troubled waters ahead for Vaughan Gething as he could now be facing a vote of no confidence after the rockiest of rocky starts to a premier.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“The First Minister’s support is dwindling by the day. I welcome Plaid Cymru’s decision to end the cooperation agreement. It was time they grew a backbone and stopped propping up a failing Labour Welsh Government.
“It is a severe blow to Welsh Labour who relied on them working together for over 40 policy areas. Welsh Labour are 1 short of an overall majority in the Senedd and we are now formally back to a minority government.
“Following my questioning of the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change, Huw Irranca-Davies MS, last week I realised how far the Welsh Government were willing to go to protect a man who makes a mockery of public service.
“This £200,000 donation was absolutely abhorrent and goes against every single ethical and moral norm in the book. It completely marred the election of the First Minister and I do believe is the fundamental reason why he narrowly beat his opponent Jeremy Miles MS.
“I am sure now that people are beginning to see the scale and scope of this scandal. Plaid Cymru are clearly beginning to. I just hope that the rest of Welsh Labour realise the grave mistake they are making by continuing to support a man who is clearly unfit to lead Wales.”
