Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has welcomed the long-overdue review of 20mph speed limits on key roads in Conwy, stressing the need for a swift and thorough assessment that takes full account of local views.
Between April and July 2024, the Welsh Government invited residents across Wales to provide feedback on the implementation of the 20mph speed limits. Every council was tasked with collecting this feedback and assessing roads against updated government guidance published in July.
Following this process, a list of priority A and B roads in Conwy has now been identified for full assessment. The review will consider factors such as traffic speed, road safety data, and local feedback before any changes are made.
Roads in Aberconwy under review include:
- B5115: Llandudno Road (Penrhyn Bay), Colwyn Road (Llandudno), and Bryn Lupus Road (Llanrhos)
- B5106: Gyffin through Tal-y-Bont, Dolgarrog to Trefriw
- A547: Conwy Bridge
- Other key roads: B5279 Tyn-y-Groes Road, Meirion Drive (Conwy), B4406 Penmachno to A5, Conway Old Road to Sychnant Pass, and Maesdu Avenue (Deganwy)
Commenting on the review, Janet said:
"This review is long overdue, and it is crucial that it is completed as soon as possible. Local voices must be heard, and changes must reflect the needs of our communities.“The whole 20mph saga has taken up too much of our time and while only a sticking plaster, this is finally a move in the right direction.
“I trust that local authorities will be compensated by the Welsh Government for the time and cost the situation they have caused local authorities across Wales”.
