Janet Finch-Saunders MS has highlighted a report showing that thousands of older people in Wales are living in dangerous housing and need urgent help to maintain their safety and independence.

According to The State of Older People’s Housing in Wales report, from Care & Repair Cymru, vulnerable older adults are at risk of ill health and hospitalisation because of the condition of their home.

Over 56,000 low-income older people needed urgent and essential repairs and adaptations to their home in 2022, and it is predicted that figure will rise this year.

As Wales has some of the oldest housing stock in Western Europe, with 26% of housing being built before 1919, repairs and adaptations are vital and ensure safety at home.

Commenting on the shocking findings, Janet said:

“This report contains shocking news for us all.

“Older people in Wales are living in a housing crisis.

“For so many vulnerable people to be living in the conditions set out by the report is completely and utterly unacceptable.

“The Minister for Climate Change and Housing must take urgent action to address this crisis.

“For the Welsh Government, doing nothing is simply not an option”.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi tynnu sylw at adroddiad sy'n dangos bod miloedd o bobl hŷn yng Nghymru yn byw mewn tai peryglus ac angen cymorth ar unwaith i gadw eu diogelwch a'u hannibyniaeth.

Yn ôl adroddiad Cyflwr Tai Pobl Hŷn yng Nghymru, gan Gofal a Thrwsio Cymru, mae oedolion hŷn bregus mewn perygl o gael salwch a gorfod mynd i'r ysbyty oherwydd cyflwr eu cartrefi.

Roedd angen gwaith atgyweirio ac addasiadau brys a hanfodol ar gartrefi dros 56,000 o bobl hŷn ar incwm isel yn 2022, a rhagwelir y bydd y ffigwr hwnnw'n codi eleni.

Gan fod gan Gymru rywfaint o'r stoc tai hynaf yng Ngorllewin Ewrop, gyda 26% o dai wedi’u codi cyn 1919, mae atgyweiriadau ac addasiadau yn hanfodol ac yn sicrhau diogelwch yn y cartref.

Wrth sôn am y canfyddiadau brawychus, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae’r adroddiad hwn yn cynnwys newyddion dychrynllyd i ni gyd.

"Mae pobl hŷn Cymru'n byw mewn argyfwng tai.

"Mae’n gwbl annerbyniol bod cymaint o bobl fregus yn byw dan yr amodau a ddisgrifir yn yr adroddiad.

"Rhaid i'r Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd a Thai weithredu ar frys i fynd i'r afael â'r argyfwng hwn.

"O’i roi yn blwmp ac yn blaen, dyw gwneud dim ddim yn opsiwn i Lywodraeth Cymru".
