This week, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales released a report highlighting the growing pressures facing older people across Wales and the wider UK, outlining the scale and impact of rising poverty.
The report draws on the latest data, statistics, and personal testimonies to shed light on the challenges experienced later in life, emphasising the urgent need to address these issues to prevent significant harm to individuals and to society as a whole.
A key finding in the report is the need for increased local funding to help identify older people who may be missing out on financial support, and to ensure they receive the advice and assistance needed to claim the benefits to which they are entitled.
Janet commented:
“The report from the Older People’s Commissioner highlights extremely serious issues currently affecting older people across Wales.
The pressures faced later in life, from fuel poverty to limited access to financial support, impact not only the individuals experiencing these challenges but entire communities.
As I have stated before, and as the report makes clear, we must see increased funding and support for local authorities so they can address this urgent issue and ensure our older generation receives the care and assistance they deserve in their later years.”
