Latest available Eye Care Measure data shows that more than 80,000 patients at the greatest risk of permanent sight loss are waiting too long for sight saving treatments.

The RNIB highlighted that this is enough to fill the Principality Stadium to compacity.

On the 11th June, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy challenged the Cabinet Secretary on these extremely concerning figures.

Commenting on ophthalmology waiting times, Janet said:

“The startling number of over 80,000 patients at the greatest risk of permanent sight loss waiting too long for sight saving treatment is extremely concerning, especially with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists predicting demand will increase by 30-40% in the next 20 years.

“Half of all sight loss is avoidable, which is why it is important that we take immediate action to address these shocking waiting times, that is causing so much worry and stress to patients that could end up with permanent sight loss.

“The Welsh Conservatives support a workforce plan to increase the ophthalmic workforce, as Wales currently has the lowest numbers of Consultant Ophthalmologists per capita of the UK nations and in Europe, with only North Macedonia having fewer.

“This strengthened workforce will reduce the numbers of patients experiencing this avoidable sight loss.”

Mae'r data Mesur Gofal Llygaid diweddaraf sydd ar gael yn dangos bod mwy na 80,000 o gleifion sydd yn y risg uchaf o golli eu golwg yn barhaol yn aros yn rhy hir o lawer am driniaethau achub golwg. Tynnodd yr RNIB sylw at y ffaith fod y nifer yn ddigon i lenwi Stadiwm y Principality i’w ymylon.

Ar 11 Mehefin, heriodd Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet ynghylch y ffigurau hynod bryderus hyn.

Wrth sôn am amseroedd aros offthalmoleg, dywedodd Janet:

"Testun pryder yw’r nifer syfrdanol o gleifion - 80,000 a mwy - sydd yn y risg uchaf o golli eu golwg yn barhaol ac sy’n aros yn rhy hir am driniaeth achub golwg, yn enwedig gan fod Coleg Brenhinol yr Offthalmolegwyr yn rhagweld y bydd y galw yn cynyddu 30-40% yn yr 20 mlynedd nesaf.

"Gellid osgoi hanner yr holl achosion o golli golwg, a dyna pam ei bod yn bwysig ein bod yn cymryd camau di-oed i fynd i'r afael â'r amseroedd aros ysgytwol hyn, sy'n achosi cymaint o bryder a straen i gleifion a allai golli eu golwg yn barhaol.

"Mae'r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig yn cefnogi cynllun y gweithlu i gynyddu'r gweithlu offthalmig, gan mai yng Nghymru ar hyn o bryd y mae’r niferoedd isaf o Offthalmolegwyr Ymgynghorol y pen yng ngwledydd y DU ac yn Ewrop, gyda dim ond Gogledd Macedonia â llai.

"Bydd y gweithlu cryfach hwn yn lleihau nifer y cleifion sy'n colli eu golwg."
