A rundown of the voting area, issues affecting the constituency and how people voted at the last election

Council services are sure to be the big issue at the polls in Conwy.

Over the last five years there has been outrage at cuts to bin collections and increases in council tax.

The area saw the introduction of monthly bin collections beginning in 2016, becoming the first county in Wales to do so.

The move was aimed to save the authority £558,000 a year.

The council then voted to increase council tax by almost 5% starting this month.

Last year the council had to defend a controversial decision to dump thousands of tonnes of stones onto the popular North Shore beach, saying it was vital to minimise the risk of flooding

Whatever the outcome of the local elections there will be a change at the top of the council as leader, Dilwyn Roberts, has decided to step down after nine years in the role.

Current make up of the council:

Conservative: 13

Labour: 10

Liberal Democrat: 4

Plaid Cymru: 12

Conwy First Ind: 15

Independents: 5

European referendum:

Conwy voted to leave the European Union in last summer’s referendum. brexit won the day by 35,357 votes to 30,147 votes

Welsh language

In the last census 30,600 people were recorded as being able to speak Welsh with 67,716 saying they could not speak the language.

Population

In the 2011 census the population of the county was 115,228.
