Net Zero 2050 Just Transition Framework “Unnecessary”

Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has slammed the Welsh Government Climate Change announcement coinciding with COP28, the publication of the Just Transition Framework consultation.

The Shadow Minister has highlighted that the framework is unnecessary because the approach of the Welsh Government is already influenced by legislative requirements including the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and the Public Sector Equality Duty. That legislation reinforces the need to ensure that decarbonisation and climate resilience work is carried out in a way that avoids creating or exacerbating inequalities.

Commenting on the publication of the consultation, Janet said:

“Whilst global leaders are meeting in the UAE to unite, unlock crucial funding, and accelerate ambitious climate action, all the Welsh Government has done is announce a completely unnecessary consultation.

“The Minister for Climate Change is wasting tax payers resources to develop a framework to achieve what is already required in law: avoid exacerbating inequalities.

“Time after time I highlight a series of policies and laws that should be pursued to help achieve Net Zero 2050, but it is apparent that the Minister is more interested in pointless bureaucracy that give the impression of action when in reality there is none”.
