Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, and the Welsh Conservatives have opposed the Visitor Levy, a policy introduced by the former Welsh Labour Government and supported by Plaid Cymru.

A recent consultation collected 1,210 responses from residents, visitors, accommodation providers, businesses, community representatives and strategic stakeholders. Of the valid respondents, 62.1% opposed the introduction of a visitor levy in Conwy.

Welcoming the news that Conwy County Borough Councillors are seeking a pause to this toxic tax,

Janet has said she welcomes this move but is sceptical as to whether it is a pre-election sweetener, and whether the tax could be introduced by a new Cabinet following the election.

Janet added:

“We cannot stand by and allow new Councillors to be elected on the promise that the tax will be paused, only for them to implement it following the election. I am calling on Conwy County Borough Council to strongly refute this proposed tax in its entirety, thereby allowing our hard-working tourism and hospitality operators to continue in business.

Additionally, I will be continuing my calls for VAT on our tourism and hospitality businesses to be cut by 10%. I will be challenging the Welsh Government to work with the UK Government to see a VAT cut introduced for this vital and valuable industry.”
