Serious concerns have been raised following reports that an elderly woman died in a corridor at the A+E department at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
Eyewitness accounts describe the woman passing away in full view of other patients in what was reported to be an extremely overcrowded emergency department. The distressing incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of the pressures facing emergency care services in North Wales.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board reiterated that corridor care is not the standard it wants for patients and recognised that too many people are waiting longer than they should in emergency departments.
The incident has intensified concerns about overcrowding, long waiting times, delayed discharges, and capacity pressures across the region’s hospitals.

“This is a truly heartbreaking situation. My thoughts are with the woman’s family and all those affected.
No one should spend their final moments in a hospital corridor. Every patient deserves dignity, privacy and compassionate care, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
Corridor care must not become normalised. Urgent action is needed to address the sustained pressures facing our emergency departments and to restore public confidence in our NHS services here in North Wales.”
