Janet Finch-Saunders MS has raised concerns following the Senedd’s approval of regulations to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Wales from October 2027.
The scheme will require a refundable deposit to be added to eligible drinks containers, with Wales becoming the only UK nation to include glass bottles. While the aim is to reduce litter and improve recycling, concerns remain about the impact on consumers, businesses and rural communities.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Bangor Conwy Môn said:
“Everyone wants to see cleaner communities, less litter and improved recycling, but the Welsh Government must ensure this scheme is practical, proportionate and delivers value for money.
There are still important questions around the impact on small businesses, rural communities and how easy it will be for people to access return points. These concerns must be properly addressed before the scheme is introduced.
I will be speaking on this issue in the Senedd and seeking assurances that the Welsh Government has fully considered the practical challenges and potential impact on communities across Wales.”
