Janet Finch-Saunders MS has welcomed action to improve public toilet provision in Penmaenmawr, with the Town Council stepping in to take responsibility for key facilities and fund essential repairs.
The decision to invest in reopening toilets at Fernbrook Road Car Park and along the Promenade highlights the importance of local leadership in delivering for communities. The Town Council have stated they recognises how important accessible public facilities are for residents and visitors alike.
However, questions have been raised as to why Conwy County Borough Council is not fully funding the public facilities. With council tax having increased over 30% in the last five years, there are growing concerns that the burden is being unfairly shifted onto town councils and local taxpayers.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Aberconwy said:
“This is a positive step by Penmaenmawr Town Council, and I give full credit to them for taking responsibility on improving facilities for the community. Public toilets are not a luxury, they are a basic service that residents and visitors rightly expect.
But it should not fall on town councils to plug the gaps. Given the level of council tax residents are paying, Conwy County Borough Council should be taking responsibility for funding and maintaining these types of facilities.
I would urge other councils to follow this example, but also call on Conwy County Borough Council to step up and deliver the support communities deserve.”
