The Memorial Site for Wallace the Dog
Janet Finch-Saunders MS, at the memorial with Rowen Community Group and villagers

The Rowen Community Group have held a memorial ceremony to mark the completion of the renovation works to the memorial stone for Wallace the dog. The scheme was funded by the Carneddau Project, and the unveiling attended by Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy.

Wallace was tragically killed by his masters carriage in 1900.  The unnamed owner buried Wallace on the side of his driveway, where the accident happened.

The memorial stone was renovated with the words “To the memory of Wallace, a fine hound and faithful companion”. The group of volunteers organised the restoration and unveiling ceremony for Wallace after a Rowen resident, Mr Eddie Doylerush passed away in 2021. Mr Doylerush would maintain the grave and leave notes for members of the public to read about Wallace’s history.

Commenting after attending the ceremony, Janet said:

“It is unfortunate that Wallace’s owner is unknown but I am heartened by the fact that the community group and village have taken Wallace as an honorary pet.

“With such enthusiasm for nature and the great outdoors it is very hard for me to resist comparing Rowen to the charming scenes so many of us enjoy in episodes of All Creatures Great and Small.

“I would like to thank the Rowen Community Group and the Carneddau Project for pursuing such a selfless scheme”.
