Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken out on BBC Newsnight about the inappropriateness of a luxury hotel in the Conwy Valley as accommodation for asylum seekers, and on the need for solutions to the nationwide crisis to be delivered.
The Member was speaking following the placing of up to 200 asylum seekers at a hotel in Dolgarrog on Sunday evening (6/11/2022). It is understood that the hotel is being used as temporary relief from the usual accommodation in Manston.
Commenting after speaking on Newsnight, Janet said:
“The Hilton Garden Inn in Dolgarrog is a new luxury hotel on a site which has received several millions of pounds of Welsh Government funding to be developed as a tourist destination. As I have outlined in my letter to Suella Braverman KC MP, Home Secretary, there are several reasons why the hotel is completely inappropriate to be used for people seeking asylum in our country.
“Urgent consideration needs to be given to moving these individuals to a different location, outside of the constituency.
“If left-wing lawyers weren’t blocking Rwanda flights, we would not need to be sending people to hotels in areas such as in my constituency.
"During this cost-of-living crisis, the spend on a luxury hotel is unjustifiable.
“We need to push forward with the British Bill of Rights to ensure we can control our borders effectively, which would mean my constituents won't have to deal with this ordeal again".

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi lleisio ei barn ar BBC Newsnight am amhriodoldeb troi gwesty moethus yn Nyffryn Conwy yn llety i geiswyr lloches, ac am yr angen i gyflwyno atebion i'r argyfwng cenedlaethol hwn.
Roedd yr Aelod yn siarad ar ôl i hyd at 200 o geiswyr lloches gael eu gosod mewn gwesty yn Nolgarrog nos Sul (6/11/2022). Deellir fod y gwesty'n cael ei ddefnyddio fel rhyddhad dros dro o'r llety arferol ym Manston.
Yn dilyn ei hymddangosiad ar Newsnight, dywedodd Janet:
“Gwesty moethus newydd ar safle sydd wedi derbyn miliynau o bunnoedd o arian gan Lywodraeth Cymru i'w ddatblygu fel cyrchfan i dwristiaid yw'r Hilton Garden Inn yn Nolgarrog. Fel rydw i wedi'i amlinellu yn fy llythyr at Suella Braverman KC AS, yr Ysgrifennydd Cartref, mae sawl rheswm pam mae'r gwesty'n gwbl amhriodol i'w ddefnyddio ar gyfer pobl sy'n ceisio lloches yn ein gwlad.
“Mae angen mynd ati ar frys i symud yr unigolion hyn i leoliad gwahanol, y tu allan i'r etholaeth.
“Pe na bai cyfreithwyr adain chwith yn rhwystro awyrennau rhag mynd i Rwanda, fyddai dim angen i ni anfon pobl i westai mewn ardaloedd fel yn fy etholaeth i.
"Yn ystod yr argyfwng costau byw hwn, does dim modd cyfiawnhau'r gwariant ar westy moethus.
“Mae angen i ni fwrw ymlaen â Deddf Hawliau Prydeinig i sicrhau y gallwn ni reoli ein ffiniau'n effeithiol, a fyddai'n golygu na fydd rhaid i fy etholwyr fynd drwy hyn eto".
