Works proposed for the Glan Conwy Interchange could include traffic lights and lane markings to improve safety and journey times

The notorious Black Cat Roundabout just off the A55 could see traffic lights and lane markings introduced to cut the number of accidents if proposals get the go-ahead.

The work could start next spring at the Glan Conwy interchange off Junction 19 of the expressway.

Plans under consideration include introducing traffic signal controls as well as "spiral" lane markings to guide drivers around the roundabout and to the exits.

There will also be provision for routes to cycle or walk across the interchange from the Glan Conwy direction to join with existing link at Narrow Lane in Llandudno Junction.

The move aims to enhance safety and improve journey times, boost air quality and reduce noise pollution.

The proposal for the A55/A470 route, which is known locally as Black Cat, is part of the Welsh Government’s pinch-point programme which targets key bottlenecks on the trunk road network.

Transport Minister Ken Skates said: "Ensuring our trunk road system is running smoothly in a safe environment is absolutely essential for the integrity of our network.

"There is little doubt this is a very busy interchange off the A55 and the option under consideration aims to improve the current situation, making it safer and more reliable for those who use it.

"We have major plans for transport in North Wales over the coming years and this is part of those proposals."

Aberconwy AM, Janet Finch-Saunders said: “I welcome any works to improve road safety at the roundabouts, and have been calling on the minister for many years to put safety first, especially in Glan Conwy itself through the introduction of a zebra crossing.

“I have written to him to ask why the roundabout is being prioritised over the calls of hundreds of residents in the village and myself for a safe crossing.

“The works at the roundabouts must include further actions towards resolving additional road safety issues in Glan Conwy”.

The scheme will be delivered by the North and Mid-Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA) who work on behalf of Welsh Government.

Measures will be put into place to ensure the works, set to last from spring until summer 2020, will cause as minimum disruption as possible.

Public consultation and information events are expected to take place over the coming months.
