Local anger as Council removes rubbish recycling centres

In the wake of frustration by local residents at the removal of recycling points at Dale Road on Llandudno’s West Shore earlier this year, and the facilities at Asda in the town just this month, the Assembly Member for Aberconwy has spoken out on behalf of constituents exasperated by these changes.

Janet said:

“In trying to force the people of Conwy to recycle, Conwy County Borough Council have introduced monthly bin collections, and almost daily, my constituents are reporting to me issues such as overflowing bins, fly-tipping, and a lack of recycling facilities.

“In 2013-14 more than 900 incidents of fly tipping were recorded in Conwy, a number that reached 1,078 in 2015-16.

“Shockingly, whilst there were 52 fly-tipping prosecutions in Wales in 2015-16, there was not a single one here in Conwy.

“Over a third(1) of incidents were roadside, indicating that people are going out of their way to dump this waste. It’s simply unacceptable.

“I am not surprised that the fly tipping numbers are so staggeringly high when the Council has actually been removing recycling centres.

“The reduction of bin collections and closure of community collection points makes a toxic trash mix, one that’s creating a fly-tipping epidemic here in Conwy”.

Notes

(1) 403 of the 1,078 incidents recorded in the area last year were on or beside the highway.

In response to the Member’s communication about public recycling facilities, the Council stated that recycling banks were removed from Dale road, West Shore in January 2016, and Asda, Llandudno, in March 2016. Copies of this correspondence are attached.
