A  Black Tie Summer Ball and Auction was held by the Rotary Club of Conwy Valley at the St George’s Hotel, Llandudno on the evening of 7th July 2017.

The event raised over £5,000, with all funds going towards the eradication of polio globally.

Further, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged to trebled the amount raised, meaning the event generation over £15,000 for this vital cause.

The charity event included a drinks reception, three course menu choice with wine, a charity auction, raffle, and DJ.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Assembly Member for Aberconwy said:

“This is a landmark year for the Rotary Club of the Conwy Valley as it is in its 70th year. Yes, for almost three-quarters of a century the club has selflessly given to the communities of the Conwy Valley and contributed to eradicating Polio globally.

“I was reminded at a meeting of the club’s global impact: since 1979 Rotary and its partners have reduced polio by 99.9% worldwide.

“Amazingly, the Rotary Clubs of the United Kingdom and Ireland have so far donated over £20 million to End Polio Now, inoculating more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.

“A final financial push is needed to tackle the disease in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and I commend the work of the Purple4Polio Ball & Auction committee in organising this fantastic event.

“Every penny raised in the Ball and Auction will be trebled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, meaning that over £15,000 will be going towards this wonderful cause – an amazing achievement!”

Mr Kevin Rowlands, Chair of the Purple4Polio Ball & Auction committee said:

“For over 30 years Rotary Clubs worldwide have been working together towards the eradication of Polio across the globe. From over 125 polio-endemic countries to now just 3, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“The theme supporting Rotary’s polio-eradication campaign has been a purple lapel worn crocus and the logo, Purple4Polio.”
