The Shadow Minister for Climate Change is today calling on the Welsh Government to commit to greater effective monitoring procedures to reduce the number of large sea animals such as dolphins, whales and harbour porpoise’s from being caught up in fishing nets.
Commenting on the matter, Janet said:
“During this climate crisis, it’s vital that we protect our marine life as much as we strive to protect our environment on land. We have unique waters around the coast of Wales which host a plethora of rich sea life.
“I hope to see greater action being taken by the Welsh Government to invest in marine conservationism and research into how we can tailor action plans to Wales specific issues.
“We need look no further than the Second State of Natural Resources Report to understand the Welsh Government’s failure to protect our marine environment. Shockingly, only 46% of the Marine Protected Area network features are in favourable condition”.
Janet has long believed that teaching primary school years about the importance of marine life locally can help with the process of boosting cross generationally awareness.
Janet further adds:
“If we’re to ensure that the work we’re doing today is for the long term, we must start to educate our younger years on the importance of caring and loving the environment around us. Here in Aberconwy, with such rich coast lines and waters, we have the perfect classroom available”.
