Inflation was 3.5% in April, up from 2.6% in March and higher than economists had expected. This is the highest since February 2024.

Water, gas, and electricity prices all went up on 1 April along with other bills, such a council tax, all of which have contributed to the UK Government missing the 2% target set by the Bank of England.

Commenting on inflation, Janet said:

“I warned in March that UK inflation would get considerably worse, and now we have it.

“Council tax bills have risen in Wales by an average of 7.21%; energy bills have risen with the cap increased by 6.4%; and water bills in Wales have risen by 27%!

“The situation is being compounded by the fact that changes to National Insurance are expected to cause 61% of businesses to raise prices and 54% to reduce employment opportunities.

“It is time for a policy shift from this mess to a point where we boost productivity, production, and reduce costs of living for our community”.

Roedd chwyddiant yn 3.5% ym mis Ebrill, i fyny o 2.6% ym mis Mawrth ac yn uwch nag yr oedd economegwyr wedi'i ddisgwyl. Dyma'r uchaf ers mis Chwefror 2024.

Aeth prisiau dŵr, nwy a thrydan i gyd i fyny ar 1 Ebrill ynghyd â biliau eraill, fel y dreth gyngor, sydd i gyd wedi cyfrannu at Lywodraeth y DU yn methu'r targed o 2% a osodwyd gan Fanc Lloegr.

Wrth sôn am chwyddiant, dywedodd Janet:

"Rhybuddiais ym mis Mawrth y byddai chwyddiant y DU yn gwaethygu'n sylweddol, a dyna’n union sydd wedi digwydd.

"Mae biliau'r dreth gyngor wedi codi yng Nghymru gan 7.21% ar gyfartaledd; mae biliau ynni wedi cynyddu gyda'r cap wedi ei godi gan 6.4%; ac mae biliau dŵr yng Nghymru wedi codi 27%!

"Mae'r sefyllfa yn cael ei gwaethygu gan y ffaith bod disgwyl i newidiadau i’r Yswiriant Gwladol arwain at 61% o fusnesau yn codi eu prisiau a 54% yn lleihau eu cyfleoedd i gael cyflogaeth.

"Mae'n bryd newid polisi o'r llanast hwn i bwynt lle rydyn ni’n rhoi hwb i gynhyrchiant ac i gynhyrchu, ac yn lleihau costau byw i'n cymuned".
