Janet Finch-Saunders MS, with Dylan Williams, Land and Asset Manager, NRW, and Kath McNulty, Team Leader Forest Operations, NRW, in a section of the Gwydir forest by Betws y Coed

Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has recently undertaken a visit to the Gwydir Forest where she was given first-hand experience of forestry management by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy met with Dylan Williams, Land and Asset Manager, NRW, and Kath McNulty, Team Leader Forest Operations, NRW, in a section of the Gwydir forest by Betws y Coed.

During the visit the Member was shown several aspects of forestry management, including measures to reduce soil damage and erosion, water runoff, and fire risks. She also saw first-hand how NRW had prepared a coupe in the forest ready for felling by a contractor, the stacking of wood in different sizes, and learnt about the work going into developing a Forest Resource Plan for the area.

Speaking after the visit, Janet said:

“The Gwydir Forest is fortunate to have a team of NRW guardians who are passionate about the environment and forestry management.

“I saw first hand the positive steps being taken by Dylan, Kath, and the local team to try and ensure that our beloved woodland is managed effectively.

“The team is taking measures to tackle soil erosion, reduce the risk of fires, and help create a mosaic of different trees in Gwydir, instead of replicating the same block approach to plantation undertaken over half a century ago.

“The new Forestry Resource Plan is being worked on, and I was delighted to hear Dylan and Kath confirm that local views will be sought on a draft in due course.

“There is no doubt that the forest is a huge part of the Conwy Valley’s character and history, so you can be sure that I will be promoting the consultation when it goes live.”

Yn ddiweddar, ymwelodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd, â Choedwig Gwydir lle cafodd brofiad uniongyrchol o reoli coedwigaeth gan Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC).

Cyfarfu'r Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy â Dylan Williams, Rheolwr Tir ac Asedau, CNC, a Kath McNulty, Arweinydd Tîm Gweithrediadau Coedwig, CNC, mewn rhan o goedwig Gwydir ger Betws-y-coed.

Yn ystod yr ymweliad, dangoswyd sawl agwedd ar reoli coedwigaeth i'r Aelod, gan gynnwys mesurau i leihau difrod ac erydiad pridd, dŵr ffo a risgiau tân. Gwelodd o lygad y ffynnon sut roedd CNC wedi paratoi llannerch yn y goedwig yn barod i'w chwympo gan gontractwr, gwelodd bren a oedd wedi'i bentyrru yn ôl meintiau gwahanol, a dysgodd am y gwaith sy'n cael ei wneud i ddatblygu Cynllun Adnoddau Coedwigaeth ar gyfer yr ardal.

Wrth siarad ar ôl yr ymweliad, dywedodd Janet:

“Mae Coedwig Gwydir yn ffodus o gael tîm o warcheidwaid CNC sy'n frwdfrydig am yr amgylchedd a rheoli coedwigaeth.

“Gwelais â'm llygaid fy hun y camau cadarnhaol sy'n cael eu cymryd gan Dylan, Kath, a'r tîm lleol i geisio sicrhau bod ein coetir annwyl yn cael ei reoli'n effeithiol.

“Mae'r tîm yn cymryd mesurau i fynd i'r afael ag erydiad pridd, yn lleihau'r risg o danau, ac yn helpu i greu mosäig o wahanol goed yng Ngwydir, yn hytrach na dyblygu'r un dull bloc ar gyfer planhigfeydd a ddefnyddiwyd hanner canrif a mwy yn ôl.

“Mae'r Cynllun Adnoddau Coedwigaeth ar waith ar hyn o bryd, ac roeddwn i wrth fy modd o glywed Dylan a Kath yn cadarnhau y bydd pobl leol yn cael mynegi barn ar gynllun drafft maes o law.

“Does dim dwywaith bod y goedwig yn rhan enfawr o gymeriad a hanes Dyffryn Conwy, felly gallwch chi fod yn sicr y byddaf yn hyrwyddo'r ymgynghoriad pan fydd yn mynd yn fyw.”
