North Wales Police have written to Janet Finch-Saunders, Member for of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, stating “Grooming gang is not something we can search our system for. We have provided those with multiple suspects linked”.

The written correspondence came in response to a Freedom of Information Request by Mrs Finch-Saunders, asking how many child sexual assaults were linked to a grooming gang in the last three financial years: 2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25.

The number of child sexual assaults with multiple suspects linked was 39. This involved 89 suspects.

There is a petition in the Welsh Parliament calling on the Welsh Government to commission a Wales-wide inquiry into sexual exploitation by grooming gangs. In addition to supporting that call, Mrs Finch-Saunders believes that North Wales Police, and all other forces in Wales, should be keeping a record of grooming gangs.

Commenting, Janet said:

“The sexual exploitation of children by grooming gangs is one of the most horrific crimes.

“The audit by Baroness Casey found continued failure to gather proper robust national data. For me this includes the fact that North Wales Police does not keep a record of grooming gangs on their system.

“Whilst I am in correspondence with North Wales Police about steps they are taking to try and reduce the incidence of child sexual assault, there needs to be national leadership from the UK Government on the categorisation of such horrific crimes.

“Where grooming gangs have been found, they should be on any police force’s record”.

ENDS

Mae Heddlu Gogledd Cymru wedi ysgrifennu at Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, yn dweud, “Dydy gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol ddim yn rhywbeth y gallwn chwilio amdano ar ein system. Rydym wedi darparu rhai sydd â sawl person dan amheuaeth".

Daeth yr ohebiaeth ysgrifenedig mewn ymateb i Gais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth gan Mrs Finch-Saunders, yn gofyn faint o ymosodiadau rhywiol ar blant oedd yn gysylltiedig â gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol yn y tair blynedd ariannol diwethaf: 2022/23, 2023/24, a 2024/25.

Nifer yr ymosodiadau rhywiol ar blant gyda sawl person dan amheuaeth oedd 39. Roedd hyn yn cynnwys 89 o bobl dan amheuaeth.

Mae deiseb yn y Senedd yn galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gomisiynu ymchwiliad Cymru gyfan i gamfanteisio’n rhywiol gan gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol. Yn ogystal â chefnogi'r alwad honno, mae Mrs Finch-Saunders yn credu y dylai Heddlu Gogledd Cymru, a'r holl luoedd eraill yng Nghymru, fod yn cadw cofnod o gangiau o’r fath.

Wrth wneud ei sylwadau, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae camfanteisio’n rhywiol ar blant gan gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol yn un o'r troseddau mwyaf erchyll.

"Canfu'r archwiliad gan y Farwnes Casey fethiant parhaus i gasglu data cenedlaethol cadarn priodol. I mi mae hyn yn cynnwys y ffaith nad yw Heddlu Gogledd Cymru yn cadw cofnod o gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol ar eu system.

"Er fy mod yn gohebu gyda Heddlu Gogledd Cymru ynglŷn â'r camau maen nhw'n eu cymryd i geisio lleihau nifer yr achosion o ymosodiadau rhywiol ar blant, mae angen arweinyddiaeth genedlaethol gan Lywodraeth y DU ar gategoreiddio troseddau erchyll o'r fath.

"Pan fo gangiau meithrin perthynas amhriodol o natur rywiol wedi’u canfod, dylent fod wedi’u cofnodi yn holl gofnodion yr heddlu".
