Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken of her delight that Anglesey has made a successful bid to establish a Freeport.

Two new Freeports have been announced: one in Anglesey and one in Port Talbot and Milford Haven. The new sites are estimated to bring forward almost £5 billion in private and public investment and create over 20,000 new, high-skilled jobs, backed by up to £26 million each in UK Government funding.

Commenting after campaigning to support the North Wales bid, Janet said:

“I am delighted that the Prime Minister has listened to the Welsh Conservative calls for two freeports to be created in Wales. Now both parts of Wales will benefit, including Aberconwy.

“Here, in North Wales we were fortunate to have Virginia Crosbie, the Welsh Conservative MP for Ynys Môn, heading up the Anglesey Freeport bidding consortium, alongside M-SParc, Bangor University, Stena Line, and Anglesey County Council.

“Whilst Virginia has been championing the case in Westminster, I have been pleased to play a role in backing the bid in the Senedd.  In fact, almost exactly two years ago I was stood in the chamber asking the then Counsel General and Minister for the Constitution to fully support Holyhead as the lead candidate to be a freeport in Wales!

“With Anglesey being less than an hour away from most of Aberconwy, I hope that as many locals as possible will consider applying for the up to 13,000 jobs that could be created.

“Already, I am lobbying the Welsh Government to take steps to improve our highway and public transport connectivity to the island!”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, ar ben ei digon bod Ynys Môn wedi gwneud cais llwyddiannus i sefydlu Porthladd Rhydd.

Mae dau borthladd rhydd newydd wedi'u cyhoeddi: y naill ym Môn a'r llall Mhorth Talbot ac Aberdaugleddau. Amcangyfrifir bod y safleoedd newydd yn cyflwyno bron i £5 biliwn o fuddsoddiad preifat a chyhoeddus ac yn creu dros 20,000 o swyddi newydd sgiliau uchel, gyda hyd at £26 miliwn o nawdd yr un gan Lywodraeth y DU.

Wrth ymateb ar ôl ymgyrchu i gefnogi cais gogledd Cymru, dywedodd Janet:

“Rwy'n falch iawn fod Prif Weinidog Prydain wedi gwrando ar alwad y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig i greu dau borthladd rhydd yng Nghymru. Bydd dwy ardal o Gymru yn elwa ar hyn bellach, gan gynnwys Aberconwy.

“Yma yn y gogledd, buom yn ffodus fod Virginia Crosbie, Aelod Seneddol y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Ynys Môn, wedi arwain consortiwm y cynnig am borthladd rhydd yn Ynys Môn, law yn llaw â M-SParc, Prifysgol Bangor, Stena Line, a Chyngor Sir Ynys Môn.

“Tra bod Virginia wedi bod yn pledio'r achos yn San Steffan, roeddwn i'n falch o chwarae fy rhan drwy gefnogi'r cais yn y Senedd. Yn wir, bron i ddwy flynedd yn union yn ôl fe sefais i yn y siambr yn gofyn i Gwnsler Cyffredinol a Gweinidog y Cyfansoddiad ar y pryd roi cefnogaeth lawn i Gaergybi fel ymgeisydd arweiniol porthladd rhydd yng Nghymru!

“Gan fod Ynys Môn lai nag awr i ffwrdd o'r rhan fwyaf o Aberconwy, rwy'n gobeithio y bydd cymaint â phosib o'r bobl leol yn ystyried ymgeisio am hyd at 13,000 o swyddi a allai gael eu creu.

“Dwi eisoes wedi lobïo Llywodraeth Cymru i gymryd camau i wella ein cysylltedd priffyrdd a thrafnidiaeth gyhoeddus â'r ynys!”
