FOI Reveals Alarming Figures on Ambulance Deaths Outside A&E’s in Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board Hospitals / Cais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth yn datgelu ffigurau brawychus ar farwolaethau mewn ambiwlansys y tu allan i adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys yn ysbytai

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Aberconwy, recently submitted a Freedom of Information request to the Welsh Ambulance Service seeking to establish how many patients had died in an ambulance while waiting outside A&E departments at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board hospitals over the past 24 months.

The response revealed an alarming total of 2,149 deaths, far higher than anticipated and has prompted serious questions about urgent care provision and patient safety.

Janet Finch-Saunders MS has consistently campaigned for action to reduce hospital waiting times and to end the practice of corridor care in A&E departments. These latest figures highlight the grave risks associated with prolonged delays and the impact they are having on patients across the region.

Commenting on the figures, Janet said:

“When I received the figures from the Freedom of Information request, I was shocked aby the scale of the numbers, this is devastating for the families of those who tragically lost their lives while waiting in the back of ambulances.

I have been campaigning throughout the year to put pressure on the Welsh Government to reduce A&E waiting times and to bring an end to the unsafe practise of corridor care in our hospitals.

These figures must serve as a wake up call to both the Welsh Government and the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board. Urgent action is needed to cut waiting times and significantly reduce these numbers over the next two years.”

Yn ddiweddar, cyflwynodd Janet Finch-Saunders, AS Aberconwy, gais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth i Wasanaeth Ambiwlans Cymru er mwyn ceisio canfod faint o gleifion oedd wedi marw mewn ambiwlans wrth aros y tu allan i adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys yn ysbytai Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr dros y 24 mis diwethaf.

Datgelodd yr ymateb gyfanswm brawychus o 2,149 o farwolaethau, sy'n llawer uwch na'r disgwyl - gan godi cwestiynau difrifol am ddarpariaeth gofal brys a diogelwch cleifion.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi ymgyrchu'n gyson dros weithredu i leihau amseroedd aros ysbytai a rhoi terfyn ar yr arfer o ofal mewn coridor mewn adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys. Mae'r ffigurau diweddaraf hyn yn tynnu sylw at y risgiau difrifol sy'n gysylltiedig ag oedi hir a'r effaith maen nhw'n ei chael ar gleifion ledled y rhanbarth.

Wrth sôn am y ffigurau, dywedodd Janet:

“Pan dderbyniais y ffigurau o'r cais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth, cefais sioc o weld y niferoedd. Mae'n beth ysgytwol i deuluoedd y rhai a gollodd eu bywydau wrth aros yng nghefn ambiwlansys.

Rydw i wedi ymgyrchu gydol y flwyddyn i roi pwysau ar Lywodraeth Cymru i leihau amseroedd aros adrannau damweiniau ac achosion brys a rhoi terfyn ar yr arfer anniogel o ofal mewn coridor yn ein hysbytai.

Mae'n rhaid i'r ffigurau hyn roi ysgytwad i Lywodraeth Cymru a Bwrdd Iechyd Betsi Cadwaladr. Mae angen gweithredu ar frys i leihau amseroedd aros a lleihau'r niferoedd hyn yn sylweddol dros y ddwy flynedd nesaf.”
