First Minister implored to urgently legislate on building safety

Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Housing, has challenged the First Minister, on the lack of progress being made on ensuring that buildings are safe in Wales, over 5 years since the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

During her scrutiny of the First Minister, the Shadow Minister asked for legislation on building safety in Wales to be fast-tracked so that leaseholders here have the same protections as they have in England.

Commenting after her contribution, Janet said:

“It is a total disgrace that the Labour Government has failed to make any substantive headway on ensuring that leaseholders have safe homes.

“There are at least 163 buildings across Wales where residents are still living in fear.

“Despite £375 million being made available to tackle building safety, some leaseholder management companies are currently liable to pay for works. That is a direct contradiction of Labour’s policy.

“The First Minister could quickly support leaseholders by replicating sections 116 to 125 of the Building Safety Act.

“I have offered a positive way forward, so the First Minister needs to explain to residents living in fear why he will not urgently act on my calls.”
