Finance Secretary Called Out By The First Minister / Yr Ysgrifennydd Cyllid yn cael ei herio gan y Prif Weinidog

First Minister Eluned Morgan made an extraordinary statement this week on the Senedd Sources podcast, claiming that the Finance Secretary, Mark Drakeford, has never been interested in the economy and that they differ significantly in their political priorities.

Within just a matter of weeks until the elections in May, these remarks are likely to deal a blow to Welsh Labour’s confidence among voters. Public support for the party is already waning, with polls indicating a drop of around 30% compared with the last election.

Wales has faced ongoing economic challenges since the Covid pandemic, recording some of the highest unemployment rates in the UK alongside weak growth figures.

The First Minister went on to reinforce her striking comments by stating that she and Mark Drakeford have a fundamental difference in outlook and approach.

 Janet said:

“This is an extraordinary comment to make about your own Finance Secretary and former First Minister.

To suggest that Mark Drakeford has no real interest in the economy, while still placing him in charge of Wales’s finances, is deeply concerning.

This remark reinforces the perception that Welsh Labour has never treated the economy with the seriousness it deserves, something reflected in Wales’s current unemployment levels and weak economic growth.

What Wales needs is serious leadership on the economy, people with a genuine commitment to growing the economy, creating jobs, and reducing the financial burden that people are facing now.”

Gwnaeth y Prif Weinidog Eluned Morgan ddatganiad rhyfeddol yr wythnos hon ar bodlediad Senedd Sources, pan honnodd nad yw'r Ysgrifennydd Cyllid, Mark Drakeford, erioed wedi bod â diddordeb yn yr economi a'u bod yn wahanol iawn yn eu blaenoriaethau gwleidyddol.

Gyda dim ond ychydig wythnosau i fynd tan yr etholiadau ym mis Mai, mae'r sylwadau hyn yn debygol o fod yn ergyd i hyder Llafur Cymru ymhlith y pleidleiswyr. Mae cefnogaeth y cyhoedd i'r blaid eisoes yn dirywio, gyda pholau piniwn yn dangos gostyngiad o tua 30% o'i gymharu â'r etholiad diwethaf.

Mae Cymru wedi wynebu heriau economaidd parhaus ers pandemig Covid, gan gofnodi rhai o'r cyfraddau diweithdra uchaf yn y DU ochr yn ochr â ffigurau twf gwan.

Aeth y Prif Weinidog ymlaen i ategu ei sylwadau syfrdanol trwy ddweud bod ganddi hi a Mark Drakeford ddulliau ac agweddau gwahanol iawn.

Meddai Janet:

"Mae’n sylw rhyfeddol i’w wneud am eich Ysgrifennydd Cyllid eich hun ac am gyn-Brif Weinidog.

Mae’n awgrymu nad oes gan Mark Drakeford gwir ddiddordeb yn yr economi, ac eto mae’n ei roi yng ngofal cyllid Cymru, sy’n sefyllfa hynod bryderus.

Mae'r sylw hwn yn atgyfnerthu'r canfyddiad nad yw Llafur Cymru erioed wedi trin yr economi gyda'r difrifoldeb y mae'n ei haeddu, rhywbeth sy'n cael ei adlewyrchu yn lefelau diweithdra presennol Cymru a thwf economaidd gwan.

Yr hyn sydd ei angen ar Gymru yw arweinyddiaeth gadarn ar yr economi, pobl sydd ag ymrwymiad gwirioneddol i dyfu'r economi, creu swyddi, a lleihau'r baich ariannol y mae pobl yn ei wynebu."
