Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken of pursuing policies that boost economic growth as one of her major priorities for 2025.

Her focus, at the start of the new Senedd term, comes following:

  • The Bank of England announcing that UK interest rates will remain at 4.75%;
  • The British Chambers of Commerce revealing statistics highlighting the severe impact of the Chancellor’s tax hikes on businesses nationwide;
  • The UK's manufacturing sector facing its steepest downturn in nearly a year.

Commenting on the state of the Welsh economy, Janet said:

“During the last General Election the Labour party made clear in their manifesto that their first step for change would be ‘1. Deliver economic stability with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible’.

“Rather than economic stability, what we have is, as Andrew Bailey said, ‘heightened uncertainty’.

“2024 has been devastating for businesses.

“The future of family farms here in Abeconwy have been completely undermined by the disastrous changes to inheritance tax rules.

“Businesses are being affected by the increase in employers National Insurance.

“And we have a hospitality sector suffering further not only because of the reduced business rate relief, but further penalising policies coming down the line from the Welsh Government.

“As I return to the Welsh Parliament, I can assure you that I will continue to promote policies that will contribute positively to economic growth, alongside challenging the Welsh Government on other serious policy failings, including in education and health”.

ENDS

-    Banc Lloegr yn cyhoeddi y bydd cyfraddau llog y DU yn aros ar 4.75%;
-    Siambrau Masnach Prydain yn datgelu ystadegau sy'n tynnu sylw at effaith ddifrifol codiadau treth y Canghellor ar fusnesau ledled y wlad;
-    Sector gweithgynhyrchu'r DU yn wynebu ei ddirywiad mwyaf serth mewn bron i flwyddyn.

Wrth sôn am gyflwr economi Cymru, dywedodd Janet:

“Yn ystod yr Etholiad Cyffredinol diwethaf, nododd y Blaid Lafur yn glir yn ei maniffesto mai eu cam cyntaf dros newid fyddai '1. Sicrhau sefydlogrwydd economaidd gyda rheolau gwario llym, er mwyn i ni allu tyfu ein heconomi a chadw trethi, chwyddiant a morgeisi mor isel â phosib’.

“Yn hytrach na sefydlogrwydd economaidd, yr hyn sydd gennym ni yw, fel y dywedodd Andrew Bailey, 'mwy o ansicrwydd’.

“Mae 2024 wedi bod yn drychinebus i fusnesau.

“Mae dyfodol ffermydd teuluol yma yn Aberconwy wedi cael eu tanseilio'n llwyr gan y newidiadau trychinebus i reolau treth etifeddiaeth.

“Mae busnesau'n cael eu heffeithio gan y cynnydd mewn Yswiriant Gwladol cyflogwyr.

“Ac mae gennym ni sector lletygarwch sy'n dioddef ymhellach, nid yn unig oherwydd y gostyngiad mewn ardrethi busnes, ond hefyd oherwydd y polisïau cosbi sy'n cael eu cyflwyno gan Lywodraeth Cymru.

“Wrth i mi ddychwelyd i'r Senedd, gallaf eich sicrhau chi y byddaf yn parhau i hyrwyddo polisïau a fydd yn cyfrannu'n gadarnhaol at dwf economaidd, ochr yn ochr â herio Llywodraeth Cymru ar fethiannau polisi difrifol eraill, gan gynnwys ym maes addysg ac iechyd”.
