After another fire at a property in Victoria Wharf in Cardiff Bay, the Shadow Minister for Housing, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, has expressed her disgust that over five years on from the Grenfell tragedy, residents have been left living in fear in Wales.
She said:
“It is a total disgrace that the Labour Government have failed to make any substantive headway in securing remedial works from residential developers, whose buildings may have concerning fire and build defects.
“People across Wales are being left frightened and concerned for the safety of their property, themselves and their families.
“Earlier this year the UK Conservative Government introduced a New Building Safety Act, which marked a major step forward in protecting leaseholders.
“Meanwhile, all Labour can do is claim to be talking to developers, and pursuing provision of advice and surveys . This is not good enough when reports are being made of fires on Welsh towers.”
She added
“The Welsh Cladiators is a group that has for years been pushing for the Welsh Government to take this issue seriously and take positive action. Following an upcoming meeting I intend to raise even more concerns at every possible opportunity because it is truly shameful that five years on from the Grenfell Tower tragedy the Labour Government is still asleep at the wheel.
“If the UK Government can take steps to protect leaseholders and tenants across England then why can’t the Welsh Government do the same here?
“Labour need to get a grip of the situation and take steps to see these remedial works completed now”.

Diffyg cynnydd ar Ddiogelwch Adeiladau gan y Llywodraeth Lafur yn warthus
Ar ôl tân arall mewn eiddo yng Nghei Fictoria, Bae Caerdydd, mae’r Gweinidog Cysgodol ar gyfer Tai, Janet Finch-Saunders AS, wedi mynegi ei dicter bod trigolion yn byw mewn ofn yng Nghymru dros bum mlynedd ers trasiedi Grenfell.
Meddai:
“Mae’n gwbl warthus bod y Llywodraeth Lafur wedi methu â gwneud unrhyw gynnydd o ran sicrhau gwaith adfer gan ddatblygwyr eiddo preswyl, y gallai eu hadeiladau fod â namau tân ac adeiladu pryderus.
“Mae pobl ym mhob cwr o Gymru yn ofni a phryderu am ddiogelwch eu heiddo, amdanyn nhw eu hunain ac am eu teuluoedd.
“Yn gynharach eleni, cyflwynodd Llywodraeth Geidwadol y DU Ddeddf Diogelwch Adeiladau Newydd, sy’n gam mawr ymlaen i ddiogelu lesddeiliaid.
“Yn y cyfamser, y cyfan y gall Llafur ei hawlio yw eu bod yn siarad â datblygwyr, a’u bod yn ceisio sicrhau cyngor i’w ddarparu i drigolion a chynnal arolygon. Dyw hyn ddim yn ddigon da pan fo adroddiadau’n cael eu gwneud am danau mewn tyrau yng Nghymru.”
Ychwanegodd
“Mae The Welsh Cladiators yn grŵp sydd wedi bod yn galw ers blynyddoedd ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gymryd y mater hwn o ddifrif a gweithredu. Yn dilyn cyfarfod sydd i’w gynnal yn fuan rwy’n bwriadu codi mwy fyth o bryderon cyn gynted â phosibl gan ei bod hi’n gwbl gywilyddus bod y Llywodraeth Lafur yn dal i gysgu wrth y llyw bum mlynedd ers Trasiedi Grenfell.
“Os gall Llywodraeth y DU gymryd camau i ddiogelu lesddeiliaid a thenantiaid ledled Lloegr yna pam na all Llywodraeth Cymru wneud yr un peth yma?
“Mae angen i Lafur gymryd gafael o’r sefyllfa a chymryd camau i sicrhau bod y gwaith adfer yn cael ei gwblhau yn awr”.
