The Grade I listed hotel on the high street, which has been owned and successfully run by the Lavin and Tinsley families for the past 16 years, has been bought by The Coaching Inn Group.

It will continue to be run by hotel manager, Joe Lavin and his existing 60-strong team.

Kevin Charity, Founder and CEO of The Coaching Inn Group, said: “We’re delighted to have acquired the Castle Hotel.

"It is one of the very best examples of a thriving family-run hotel, which has been sympathetically enhanced to combine heritage with a boutique hotel experience.

“The hotel has been profitably run for the past 16 years and we look forward to working with Joe Lavin and his excellent team to further grow the Castle’s reputation and attract even more visitors and guests.”

Built on the site of a 12th century Cistercian Abbey, former patrons of the 300-year-old hotel include William Wordsworth, Samuel Johnson and Charlotte Brontë – who honeymooned at the Castle.

The 27 bedroom hotel retains many original features, including stone mullion windows and fire surrounds.

It boasts a bar, restaurant and beauty salon, which are popular with the local community and tourists alike

The Coaching Inn Group has 13 historic venues across the UK - including the Royal Oak Hotel in Welshpool - and has built a strong reputation for service excellence.

It is currently underway with a £50 million expansion programme across the UK.

Janet commented:

'Over the years, the hotel has acquired an excellent reputation for its rooms and cuisine'.

'All the team have earned a reputation for superb customer services. Therefore, I am pleased that the 60 strong team, including Mr Lavin, will be staying on'.

'Both previous owners have developed the business successfully over the last two decades, and I am confident that The Coaching Inn Group will continue with the good work'.

'I would like to wish the new proprietors luck with the business'.
