Conwy's Cabinet continues to pilot monthly bin collections despite backlash

Some councillors fear reducing the number of bin collections could spark a rise in fly-tipping and littering

Conwy will continue to ‘pilot’ monthly bin collections despite a backlash from disgruntled residents.

Conwy’s Cabinet has decided to continue to implement three weekly collections for general waste wheelie bins - with a four-weekly pilot in parts of the county for the foreseeable future.

Last month councillors rejected a controversial proposal to roll out monthly bin collections to all households in Conwy saying it was a “step too far”.

The cash-strapped local authority wanted to bring in the measure to make savings of close to £400,000.

Members of the Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee instead recommended the county go on three weekly collections but yesterday Conwy’s Cabinet decided to continue with the pilot scheme.

The decision didn’t impress Deganwy Cllr Julie Fallon who said yesterday: “It is a shame that the cabinet could not make a decision today.

"This leaves everybody in limbo about what is happening, the cabinet are paid a lot of money to make decisions, not avoid them.”

Hugh Jones, from Tyn y Groes, said: “They have held the trial and councillors voted to go back to three weeks but now the Cabinet are reversing that decision.

“I want to know how long this ‘trial’ will continue as it can’t be indefinite.

It is completely unfair to have different services for different residents - unless they want to give us a council tax discount.

Aberconwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders said: “There has been considerable furore which has arisen as a result of the four-weekly trial, and many residents have voiced very serious concerns as regards their ability to manage with such infrequent collections, as well as increases in fly-tipping and littering.

“The three best performing councils in Wales for recycling rates all collect household waste fortnightly, and I would urge the council to look at these examples of best practice going forward to ensure that we move forward with a sustainable and appropriate service for residents.”
