The Conwy Traffic Management Centre have been thanked in person for their rapid response to the fire in the Conwy Tunnel which was declared a major incident by emergency services on 19 June 2025.

Ten fire engines and four specialist appliances were called to the scene. There were no fatalities, and the tunnel had reopened eastbound the next morning, with a contraflow system in place.

Commenting after visiting the Centre, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:

“I am extremely impressed that in under a minute of detecting smoke from the crane travelling into the tunnel, the Conwy Traffic Management Centre had succeeded to close the road and implement the first steps of the emergency response plan.

“The measures in place to help stranded individuals exit safely are impressive, as is the fact that the team are monitoring the section of trunk road 24/7.

“At any second an accident could occur on the A55. Having spoken to the team in Conwy, and learnt about their system control process, I am confident that we are in safe hands. The rapid response to the fire locally proves that, so the team does deserve a big thank you. Diolch!”

Mae Canolfan Rheoli Traffig Conwy wedi cael diolch personol am ymateb yn gyflym i'r tân yn Nhwnnel Conwy a gafodd ei ddatgan yn ddigwyddiad mawr gan y gwasanaethau brys ar 19 Mehefin 2025.

Cafodd deg injan dân a phedwar adnodd arbenigol eu galw i'r digwyddiad. Doedd dim marwolaethau, ac roedd y twnnel wedi ailagor tua'r dwyrain fore trannoeth, gyda system traffig dwyffordd ar waith.

Ar ôl ymweld â'r Ganolfan, dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS:

"Mae wedi creu argraff fawr arna’ i fod Canolfan Rheoli Traffig Conwy wedi llwyddo i gau'r ffordd a rhoi camau cyntaf y cynllun ymateb brys ar waith mewn llai na munud o ganfod mwg o'r craen a oedd yn teithio i mewn i'r twnnel.

"Mae'r mesurau sydd ar waith i helpu unigolion sy'n sownd i adael yn ddiogel yn drawiadol, yn ogystal â'r ffaith bod y tîm yn monitro'r rhan o'r gefnffordd 24/7.

" Gallai damwain ddigwydd ar yr A55 ar unrhyw eiliad. Ar ôl siarad â'r tîm yng Nghonwy, a dysgu am eu proses rheoli system, rwy'n hyderus ein bod ni mewn dwylo diogel. Mae'r ymateb cyflym i'r tân yn lleol yn profi hynny, felly mae'r tîm yn haeddu diolch. Diolch!".
