Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has unearthed that Conwy County Borough Council has spent £18,220.20 on security services for the site since May 2016.
In a Freedom of Information Request response, the Local Authority advised that £15,929.88 has been paid so far, and that there are outstanding payments for 2024 which are yet to be invoiced, totalling £2,290.32.
The contract for the not-fit-for-purpose building started in May 2016, meaning the Authority has, to date, spent around £2 million – costing taxpayers around £20,000 a month. The council is locked into a contract for the multi-million-pound HGV depot until at least 2031.
Commenting on the newly disclosed cost of security, Janet said:
“When you think that the situation for the beleaguered Conwy County Borough Council couldn’t get any worse, we now discover that they have been paying thousands for security at the HGV depot in Mochdre that can’t house trucks.
“The contract has been a mess from day one, and I would have thought the Leader and Cabinet would be looking to come out of that contract but not at the cost to taxpayers.
“There needs to be accountability for this appalling waste of taxpayers money. In business, such a catastrophic spend as this would lead to those accountable being held responsible. Why should it be any different in the public sector?”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi datgelu bod Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy wedi gwario £18,220.20 ar wasanaethau diogelwch ar gyfer y safle ers mis Mai 2016.
Mewn ymateb i Gais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth, dywedodd yr Awdurdod Lleol fod £15,929.88 wedi'i dalu hyd yma, a bod yna daliadau yn weddill ar gyfer 2024 sydd heb eu hanfonebu eto, sef cyfanswm o £2,290.32.
Dechreuodd y contract ar gyfer yr adeilad, sy’n anaddas i'r diben, ym mis Mai 2016, sy'n golygu bod yr Awdurdod, hyd yma, wedi gwario tua £2 filiwn - gan gostio tua £20,000 y mis i drethdalwyr. Mae'r cyngor wedi'i ymrwymo i gontract ar gyfer y depo HGV gwerth miliynau o bunnoedd tan o leiaf 2031.
Wrth sôn am y gost o ran diogelwch sydd newydd ei datgelu, dywedodd Janet:
"Pan roedden ni’n meddwl na allai'r sefyllfa ar gyfer Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy waethygu, rydyn ni nawr yn darganfod eu bod wedi bod yn talu miloedd am wasanaethau diogelwch yn y depo HGV ym Mochdre sydd ddim yn addas ar gyfer tryciau.
"Mae'r contract wedi bod yn llanast o'r diwrnod cyntaf, a byddwn wedi meddwl y byddai'r Arweinydd a'r Cabinet yn ceisio dod allan o'r contract hwnnw - ond nid ar draul trethdalwyr.
"Mae angen bod yn atebol am y gwastraff ofnadwy hwn o arian trethdalwyr. Mewn busnes, byddai gwariant mor drychinebus â hyn yn arwain at ddwyn i gyfrif y rhai sy’n gyfrifol. Pam ddylai pethau fod yn wahanol yn y sector cyhoeddus?"
