Conwy Council Tax up 20% in Two Years

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has expressed her deep concern and disappointment at Conwy County Borough Council’s indication that council tax could rise by a staggering 10% for the third consecutive year.

Over two years, this would represent a 20% increase, which will place an intolerable burden on local families, pensioners, and hard-working individuals already grappling with the cost-of-living crisis.

This latest proposal comes despite a 3.6% rise in Conwy’s local government settlement from the Welsh Government. However, Conwy remains among the lowest-funded councils in Wales, receiving £304 less per person than Denbighshire and £160 less per person than Gwynedd.

Commenting on the hike, Janet said:

“While I understand the challenges local authorities face, such a steep hike is simply unaffordable for many residents. Pensioners on fixed incomes and families struggling to make ends meet will be disproportionately impacted by this decision.

"The council needs to prioritise making cost efficiencies rather than repeatedly placing the financial burden on residents.

"Rather than imposing higher taxes on residents, the council should carry out a comprehensive review of its spending to uncover and implement cost-saving measures.

“Raising council tax by another 10% for yet another year again risks making life even harder for the most vulnerable in our community”
