After Cllr Aaron Wynne, Cabinet Member for Education, Conwy County Borough Council, presented a report to the Education Committee on 4/11/2025 with the aim of commencing a consultation on the potential closure of Ysgol Betws-y-Coed, the Committee voted to support the proposal by Cllr Liz Roberts to defer the decision.
During the Cabinet meeting on 11/11/2025 the Cabinet went against the recommendation of the Education Committee and voted to commence a consultation on the possibility of closing Ysgol Betws-y-Coed.
A public meeting took place at Betws-y-Coed Memorial Hall on Monday 27/10/2025, where there was strong opposition to the possibility of closure, and around 1,000 have signed a petition.
Commenting after the vote, Janet said:
“The Cabinet have made a mockery of the democratic process at Conwy County Borough Council.
“Cllr Liz Roberts, Betws-y-Coed Community Council, local residents, and I have raised serious concerns about the process. In fact, even Cllr Liz, as the local County Councillor, was not notified of the proposal by the Local Authority!
“Following the Education Committee vote, I formally wrote to the Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Aaron Wynne, with further questions and concerns, but no reply has been issued.
“It is very easy to come to the conclusion that the leadership of Conwy County Borough Council and Cllr Aaron Wynne, Cabinet Member for Education, have been determined to consult on the potential closure of Ysbyty Ifan and Betws-y-Coed from the outset. If they weren’t, they would at least have listened to the Education Committee and deferred the decision on Betws-y-Coed”.

Ar ôl y bleidlais, dywedodd Janet:
“Mae'r Cabinet wedi gwneud proses ddemocrataidd Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy yn destun gwawd.
“Mae'r Cynghorydd Liz Roberts, Cyngor Cymuned Betws-y-Coed, trigolion lleol a minnau wedi codi pryderon difrifol am y broses. Mewn gwirionedd, ni chafodd hyd yn oed y Cynghorydd Liz, y Cynghorydd Sir lleol, ei hysbysu o'r cynnig gan yr Awdurdod Lleol!
“Yn dilyn pleidlais y Pwyllgor Addysg, ysgrifennais yn ffurfiol at y Cynghorydd Wynne, yr Aelod Cabinet dros Addysg, gyda rhagor o gwestiynau a phryderon, ond dydw i ddim wedi cael ateb.
“Mae'n hawdd iawn dod i'r casgliad bod arweinwyr Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy a'r Cynghorydd Aaron Wynne, yr Aelod Cabinet dros Addysg, wedi bod yn benderfynol o ymgynghori ar y posibilrwydd o gau ysgolion Ysbyty Ifan a Betws-y-Coed o'r cychwyn cyntaf. Os nad oedden nhw, fe fydden nhw o leiaf wedi gwrando ar y Pwyllgor Addysg ac wedi gohirio'r penderfyniad ynghylch Ysgol Betws-y-Coed”.
